Yve meets Melissa Balmer

by Yve on August 2, 2010

I have to say that i am having such a blessed summer meeting so many talents here in Long Beach. I love to meet many local Long Beach women and work with them in creating a new look and expression for themselves.  Women have so many roles in this day and age and i feel they are so strong and capable of anything.  I love to find out all the great gifts a woman has to offer while doing what i do best: Co-create and express!

I had the privilege to meet Melissa Balmer at the Long Beach Wedding Collectives meeting. She does all our social media and P.R. for the collective. I was sitting there watching her presentation and was fascinated by her ability to engage me. I invited her to breakfast one afternoon and there we decided that we both needed a new make over. YES! I love the sound of this! She knew that she wanted to collaborate on creating a new look for herself and she also knew exactly what I needed to spice up my business. Perfect! Let’s get to work!!! She came in and I cut her hair  a lot shorter with some romantic no-frills waves and gave her soft summery hues for her make up. She looked so amazing! WOW! She will be able to use these great pictures on her marketing material and I see she has it posted on her Facebook page already.  Hooray!  The beautiful shots were taken by Isa Love of Absolut Photography.

I am grateful for the advice and direction Melissa has given me in my business. She has been a valuable guide in developing my business and my material. I have also acquired a new perspective on how I do things. I am forever learning and growing and am so open to her knowledge. She helped me see how easy it was to work with social media, blogging,  and connecting with others in the city.   Her approach is very clear and she is so warm and personal.  My partner Armando and I also went to her workshop and loved the detailed information on social media and her favorite tips. I recommend these workshops to anyone who is trying to grow their business and look at it trhrough fresh new eyes.

Melissa is a Long Beach native and can be seen hanging out in some of her favorite places like Kafe Neo, El Dorado Park, Long Beach Museum and Portfolio or Sipology. If you see her and have a business of your own, ask her what amazing things she can do for you! She loves doing business with consciousness and heart. Thank you Melissa! It is always a pleasure.

With wedding season here it seems brides are in the market for the perfect look with a great stylist and make up artist.  I have been preparing brides with hair and make up for over 16 years and i can definitely share with you some tips on what to look for when you are shopping around.  It is easy to go with the hair stylist/make up artist that charges the lowest price.  But that doesn't mean they are the best.  So, here are helpful hints to help you out.

Choose a stylist with experience in bridal hair and make up.
Experience is necessary.  You wouldn't just want your hair or make up to look great for just a few hours.  Even if you choose a natural look it should last all night. Make sure your stylist/make up artist has at least have 3 years in the business and has done enough brides to show you a personal portfolio.  Look to see if they are up to date in with style and also can do a classic look.  But, most important they must work well with the style you are looking to achieve.  The artist might only work with modern brides and if you are looking for a classic or vintage feel then trust someone else that is experienced with your vision.  When you are looking for a make up artist make sure she know how to appyly what you want and have it look good during the day, on camera, and at night.

Make sure they are located close to the venue or are willing to travel to you or your hotel/venue.
Don't spend time traveling to them if they can come to you.  You would want this process to be effortless on your part and you would want to enjoy this experience of getting made up!  Drink Champagne and relax.

Choose someone who can work with you and gives you what you want.
Your stylist/make up artist must work with you to help you look like the best "you" there is.  You don't want to look like someone else.    You husband to be would appreciate recognizing his bride.  If she isn't willing to work with you then find someone that is.  Your opinion is what matters after all.
Work with someone who can do both hair and make up.  It is so fantastic that i have the talent of working on a bride and can complete the whole look both the hair and the make up.  I feel that is a benefit to what i do and is rare.  I always bring help if i need to, but i love to tie in the hair and make up to compliment the dress and the brides skin colour.  More than one vision on a bride might not work as well.

Choose someone who respects your time.
If a your stylist shows up 30 minutes late on your trial run then don't bother with trusting her to be on time on your wedding day.  Of course, things happen so use discretion on this one.

Find someone who is recommended by a friend.
You can certainly count on a friend to give you the right direction and use your trial run to seal the deal.  You can always get a few recommendations and do a few trials with different artists.

Make sure your make up stays true to colour even after 8 hours.
The make up should not turn orange or yellow after dancing or long wear.  Testing the products on your trial run.  People can be sensitive to certain ingredients.  Your trial run gives you the opportunity to try this out.  If you have a reaction then communicate that to your stylist and then she could use an alternative.  I always give the option to do your make up with organic mineral make up.

Have the artist document the trial run.
After paying someone to perfect your make up and hair for your trial run make sure it is written down and photographed.  Leaving it up to her memory might not work so well.  Even if you love her style and you love what she did you want to make sure the correct colours are worked with for your wedding day in regards to your make up and that your hair is just like you hoped for.
